Accurate weighing measurements are important no matter what is being weighed or for what reason. The tare function allows you to disregard the weight of a container so you can know the actual weight of the main product. For example, in baking you don't need to know how much the container that holds your sugar weighs, you just want to know how much the sugar itself weighs. You can place the container on the scale and then tare the weight which resets the reading to 0 lbs. Now when you add in the sugar into the container, you will only see the actual weight of the sugar. See this video for a better idea of what tare weight is.
